Building Community

"Community is an essential part of every online game. As our Global Brand Manager Chris Lye likes to say, “We’re not a video game company, we’re a community building company. We just happen to have one of the coolest ways to build a community, which is through a video game.” Community is at the heart of all of us here at ArenaNet; it was at the core of the philosophy of Guild Wars from the beginning. And, like ArenaNet is innovating and changing the genre by thinking boldly (and going boldly where no game development studio has gone before), we’re always coming up with new ways to work together with all of our passionate fans out there."

"Let me point out the two biggest changes in the ways we interact with our communities between the original Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2 right up front: we will have official forums, and we will not have a traditional fansite program."

"This does NOT mean we will no longer support all our dedicated fansites out there! We will continue to work with fansites as we have done in the past, but in addition to “traditional” fansites, we will also provide a platform to support smaller, specialized communities/projects that would never have had a place in a traditional program, like blogs, machinima, etc."

"Let’s take a step back and look at how community, gaming and community management have evolved over the last 6 years. When I started working on Guild Wars back in 2006, traditional fansites and forums were the main hub for fans to gather. Social networks like Facebook and Twitter were in their infancy."

"A lot has changed since then."

"One thing that is very important to keep in mind: there is no single “community.” It’s not a monolithic, unified demographic, but a many-faceted, living, breathing ecosystem. You will find communities on Fansites, Twitter, Facebook, blogs, YouTube, guild sites, and lots of other places."

"The vast majority of these communities will never visit fansites or official forums, and may not even resemble the traditional notion of a gaming community. As an example: you will find a lot of people on Facebook who play games, both console and PC, but would not necessarily consider themselves “gamers” in the traditional way. However, they are still passionate and can be valuable contributors to the overarching community."

"The challenge for modern community management is to be able to reach out to all those different communities and help them with their specific characteristics and needs. So our goal is to use a scalable, inclusive ecosystem instead of a rigid fansite program that doesn’t scale well and excludes large parts of the overall fanbase."

"To achieve our goal, we also need our fans in all the different communities to be proactive. By working together, with you bringing amazing and great community projects to our attention and us highlighting them for the broader community, we will be able to build something great and lasting that will benefit each and every one of you. To help facilitate this, we will give you tools like our wiki and specialized forums that allow our passionate players to freely collaborate and share assets and ideas."

"This brings me to the second point I want to address in this article – our community philosophy."

"Our ultimate goal is to create an environment that is respectful, welcoming, inclusive and friendly. We want to create a global community where people will feel at home, and an environment that will foster both creativity and collaboration."

"The main goal is to be inclusive, not exclusive, to encourage collaboration between communities, and to generate an atmosphere that is helpful, friendly, and above all, respectful. There is an unfortunate tendency in some online communities to encourage behavior that is detrimental to the fun of a lot of players by allowing a rather toxic and unwelcoming atmosphere. We want to set a new standard and make the Guild Wars 2 community a mature, friendly, helpful and inclusive one that is recognized throughout the industry as being so. With that goal, we will ensure that both our game and our forums reflect our standards, and we will evaluate our support for communities based on the standards they enforce upon themselves.Hopefully with this article we could shed light on some of the questions we have seen popping up here and there in the past. This is an exciting time, and all of us here at ArenaNet can’t wait to build an awesome community with you."

"We’ll see you in-game!"

~"Building Community" Arenanet Blog March 15th, 2012

Welcome to the Year of the Dragon!

Today is Lunar New Year’s Day, and according to the Asian zodiac system, the first day of the Year of the Dragon. It’s an auspicious omen for all of us at ArenaNet, as we get ready to make this our own Year of the Dragon.

According to tradition, the dragon embodies passion, independence, and ambition. We think it’s a perfect analogy for what we’re trying to accomplish with Guild Wars 2. We’re a company full of MMO and RPG fans, and we’ve set out to fundamentally rethink how you deliver an RPG experience online. So this year, the Year of the Dragon, let’s usher out old thinking – the tired old quest model, stiff repetitive combat, and monthly fees – and usher in the new.

Guild Wars 2 has captured the imagination of gamers and media all over the world with its action-oriented combat, its living world full of dynamic events, its highly personalized role-playing experience, and the handcrafted artistry that suffuses every element of the game. Last year, thousands of you joined us at shows and events all over the world to try Guild Wars 2 for yourself. This year, you’ll finally be able to immerse yourself in the vast, diverse world of Tyria.

We recently finished our first closed beta test, and we’re now ready to hold progressively larger events. In February we’ll invite select press to participate in beta testing, and in March and April we’ll aggressively ramp up the size of our beta test events so that many of you will have a chance to participate. And of course, this all leads to the release of Guild Wars 2 later this year.

So stay tuned to our official Guild Wars 2 website, our Facebook page, and this blog for more information about how to participate in an upcoming beta event.

It’s been an incredible adventure over the past five years, working with our community and our team of dedicated artists, designers, and programmers to realize this vision. This year, the seeds of that work come to fruition. We can’t wait to play the game with you.

So welcome to the Year of the Dragon – the year of Guild Wars 2.

~Welcome to the Year of the Dragon - Official Arenanet Blog

Renegade (Again)

So Wizard dropped a bombshell over at our FB page. Apparently some smart folks got together and churned out a secure, optimized version of C&C Renegade. AND you can buy a new key if you lost yours. New logins. New fixes. New everything. Including a pretty crazy looking process to get it. I'm gonna give it a try and let you guys know how it goes.

Renegade Upgrade

(READ THE WHOLE THING BEFORE YOU TRY TO PLAY RENEGADE)

This is an upgrade for the Original Renegade and it replaces ALL of the other upgrades as the anti cheat teams got together and decided to make a major effort to save Renegade. How did they do this? They combined all the anti cheat efforts into one so if anyone should develop a “New Cheat” the team will devise a counter. The new version also supports MUCH improved graphics and fixes most of the known bugs in Renegade and they are working together to fix the others.

How did they do this? Using what is called “TT Scripts 4.0” it is an exe file which updates Renegade and has a major bonus, it will download new maps for you AND will replace maps that are not “approved” with the “New improved map” version. There are new sounds and textures too. It is a beta and is undergoing testing and there is a new HUGE map called C&C_Fjords which you can ONLY get through this new system I have played it and it is GREAT. There are some new skins and the NOD light tank is a now a real tank with great camo.
I believe that ALL the servers will be switching over to this new system in the near future and so it is important that you all update before the next fest, and sooner if you wish to play Renegade on-line.

There are a couple of negatives though – which I hope will be fixed soon. The chief one is that the Renegade Resurrection loader is not yet available for the game and you must use either Gamespy (Which sucks) or Westwood On-Line from within the multiplayer menu system. I prefer WOL for now BUT in order to do this you need to register with XWIS which is the replacement for WOL and is sanctioned by EA (Registration is FREE). In order to do that you MUST enter your Game Registration code (The 22 digit code on the back of the Renegade CD case. When you do this you will be GIVEN an alphanumeric password which you MUST use to be able to play renegade from the multiplayer menu do not enter any other password or try to play Renegade on-line until AFTER you get the password and set your Nickname. BOTH are required to get to the list of Renegade servers. Once you have these and have upgraded to Scripts 4.0 you will have no trouble as the updates are supposed to be installed automatically. You can also register for Tiberian Sun and RA2 for on line play at the same screen if you have these other games and so wish. (I did)

Now for the Point form upgrade process:

FIRST register with XWIS so you can get the on-line server listings

1. Go to http://xwis.net/control_panel/ and select “Register”

2. You will enter your login name and your login password then you will be redirected to the XWIS - Control Panel

3. This is where you enter your game serial numbers and Nickname. DO NOT try to enter your Nick until AFTER you enter the serial number for Renegade and either or both of the other games if you want to play them on line.

4. Then select RG (Renegade) from the drop down menu in the Create Nick line and add your Nickname.

5. You will notice that you have a Nickname AND a special password these will be needed for playing the game so write them down. You will only need to enter them once In Renegade. To make things easier you might want to use the log-in name as the same as your Nick or not. It is up to you.

6. NOTE: The XWIS boys are clever, if you do NOT have a game key they will sell you one using paypal ($14.53).
You are now good to go to update Renegade.

7. If you did not yet register with XWIS do so now as outlined above as it is a pain to go back later after you have entered an unrecognized password in the multiplayer menu.

8. Go to http://www.tiberiantechnologies.org/downloads and download the TT 4.0 Client BETA, yes it is a beta but works very well.

9. You will notice that it is an EXE file so IF your Renegade is in the usual directory it will work with no effort. If not you may have to enter the correct path. (The usual Directory is C:\Westwood\Renegade) Save the file to run later.

10. Ensure that you are not running Renegade, start the upgrade by clicking on the file. It will update your version of Renegade. It will install over all of the old upgraded and patched versions of Renegade so you will no longer need Renegade Resurrection or the “No-CD Patch”.

11. IF you ever need to reload Renegade OR you have a problem with the installation of the new file then reload Renegade and run the 1.037 patch THEN run the new updater and all should be well.

12. Remember to run the “Config” file which can be found in the startup menu under Westwood, Renegade to configure your system for the new game video settings (I run 1680 x 1050 on my big machine and 1920 x 1200 on my laptop both with 12x AA so the picture is OK.

13. Remember to pull both your Nick and your XWIS generated password off the XWIS site before you run Renegade or you will have to ALT Tab out to get them when you are asked to enter them in the multiplayer startup menu.

Remember that Windows has lots of accept screens before you can run a file for the first time so you will likely need to ALT Tab out to allow the files to run for the first time when you run the game as it will likely hang unless you do so.
